Samsung’s Z Flip 5 was quickly followed by Motorola’s Razr 40 Ultra in July, leaving only a brief one-month pause between the launches. The two hottest clamshell phones right now are these two.
According to reports, clamshell phones are more popular than foldable phones overall, especially among women. Therefore, I suppose this is the ideal time to let you make an informed choice about your phone. Now let’s get into the specifics.
Display and Design
Both the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 feature clamshell designs, but they also differ noticeably. In comparison to the Z Flip 5, which has a 6.7-inch screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate, the Razr 40 Ultra has a main screen that is 6.9 inches larger and has a refresh rate of 165 Hz. They both share the same resolution and support HDR10+.
Although it is partially obscured by camera lenses, the Razr 40 Ultra’s 3.6-inch display is larger and delivers better animations. To prevent camera interference, the Z Flip 5 employs a folder-shaped 3.4-inch display, while the Razr’s design appears more seamless.
Although the Motorola has a larger screen, higher resolution, and a faster refresh rate, the Flip offers a higher peak brightness, making it more suitable for outdoor use. The Flip needs modifications in order to run programs on its external display, whereas the Razr can do so directly.
Both phones strive for a sleek, premium appearance. The Z Flip 5 is somewhat thicker at 187g but smaller at 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm than the Razr 40 Ultra, which weighs 185g and measures 170.8 x 74 x 7 mm.
The Z Flip 5’s hinge outlasted the Razr 40 Ultra’s hinge, which could only withstand 1,26,367 folds, according to a YouTuber’s test.
The Razr has an IP52 rating for dust resistance, whilst the Z Flip 5 additionally has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.
Although the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 excels in general usability and ticks all the requirements, the Razr 40 Ultra offers some advantages. Consequently, I would advise selecting the Flip 5.
Performance & Software
When it comes to performance, both tools are powerful. A fluid user experience is guaranteed by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the Razr 40 Ultra. However, the Z Flip5 has a slight speed advantage thanks to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.
The Z Flip 5 provides up to 512GB of quick UFS 4.0 storage and 8GB of RAM for storage. The Razr 40 Ultra offers only 256GB of the significantly slower UFS 3.1 storage, matching the 8GB RAM.
Both phones utilize Android 13 as their operating system. Samsung’s Z Flip 5, on the other hand, features their unique OneUI, which is optimized for foldable phones and provides up to four significant Android updates. The Razr 40 Ultra keeps things straightforward with a close-to-stock Android appearance and pledges three significant Android updates. Although this section is highly individualized, I would personally lean toward One UI.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra both have dual camera setups. Along with a 32MP front camera, the Razr 40 Ultra has a 12MP wide sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide lens. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, has a 10MP front camera and two 12MP back sensors (wide and ultra-wide). On paper, the Razr appears to be superior, especially for taking selfies.
The performance in the actual world, however, offers a different tale. The camera on the Razr frequently produces mediocre shots with problems like blown-out colors and occasionally fuzzy images. The quality of long-range photography is poor, and zooming in more than three times results in poor color reproduction. The Razr 40 Ultra’s camera performs somewhat better than normal $300 phones, according to our YT Editor.
The Flip 5, on the other hand, builds on Samsung’s camera prowess to produce sharper and more reliable images, easily outperforming the Razr.
Due to their designs, both devices have the unique ability to take selfies using the primary camera. Again taking the lead, the Flip 5 is the superior option for photography enthusiasts.
Battery & Charging
The Razr 40 Ultra has a 3800mAh battery, whereas the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a slightly smaller 3700mAh battery. Both phones have a battery life of about a day, with the Flip 5 slightly outperforming its predecessor. The Razr 40 Ultra can be charged using cable charging at 30W and wireless charging at 5W.
The Flip 5 delivers better 15W wireless charging as well as 25W wired charging in contrast. Although neither phone charges quickly, they are both capable of meeting the very minimum requirements. Overall, the Flip 5 delivers significantly faster wireless charging while the Razr has a little larger battery.
