The worldwide display technology market is dominated by LG Display, as is well known. Their area of expertise is the development, production, and marketing of display technologies, with an emphasis on OLED and LCD technologies. Mobile devices, tablets, TVs, and automobile displays are just a few of the many uses for which LG Display provides displays.
Now, two significant businesses, LG Display and LG Chem, have reportedly collaborated to develop a crucial substance known as p-type dopants for OLED panels. They had to import it before this from other nations. This is a significant development for LG Display as they work to produce more OLED components domestically. They boosted the proportion of supplies they purchased from local vendors from 58% to 64% last year.
LG Paves the Way with In-House OLED Material Development
Dopants alter how OLEDs function. One of these materials, P-type dopants, aids in the uniform illumination, power efficiency, and durability of OLEDs. Some p-type dopants, however, are easily harmed by air.
The collaboration between LG Display and LG Chem over the past ten years has led to this remarkable accomplishment. The material was created by LG Display, which also produced it. Their new material performs just as well as the old product they purchased.
LG Display chief Yoon Soo-young stated that since the company unveiled its first large-screen OLED TV in 2013, they have been trying to produce their own core materials. A new type of OLED that is brighter and lasts longer will require this new material even more.
With their own p-type dopants, LG Display aims to improve their supply chain, safeguard their intellectual property, and maintain their competitive edge in the OLED industry. Over Sony and Samsung, LG held the most market share for OLED TVs as of the beginning of 2023.
In the future, LG Display will employ this new material in OLED screens of various sizes. Another LG Display executive, Lee Hyun-woo, claimed that the company stands out in the OLED industry by producing and acquiring materials locally.
This shift towards scientific improvement and self-reliance in OLED technology is an important step, especially in light of LG’s future partnership with Apple. According to rumors, Apple is collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display to develop bezel-free OLED panels for upcoming iPhone models.
